Visiting Carewest

We encourage family and friends to visit as often as possible and visiting hours are flexible. Meals and snacks are available for purchase at most care centres (please see below for information about Carewest cafeterias). Please check with the unit staff for the best times to visit and check with the main entrance receptionist for details about visitor parking.

You may wish to visit with your loved one outside of the centre. Please speak with staff as far in advance as possible, to ensure that you are aware of any safety precautions and whether or not medications are needed to go with you for that time frame. Family members, friends, residents or clients must sign out if a resident or client will be leaving the centre.  Please ask the unit clerk to explain the sign-out procedures on your unit.

Positive Talk

Positive Talk

At Carewest, we strive to ensure the relationships we have with our residents, clients and their families remain positive and constructive. There are many different people working within our care centres and we all work towards a common goal – striving to provide safe and excellent care for residents and clients and supportive relationships with families and significant others. We all have to work together to ensure the safest and best care possible. Often times in a health care setting, situations may arise that require questions, suggestions and decisions regarding care. Being aware of how to communicate with staff about care can make all the different in ensuring we are all working effectively towards our common goals and building solid care partnerships. We developed the Positive Talk series of booklets to help. Please read our Positive Talk – A resource for Carewest residents, clients and their families.

Infection Prevention and Control

Our goal is to prevent and control infections among our residents and staff. Our IP&C service provides expertise to all Carewest centres on infection control issues to support staff, volunteers and families in providing safe resident care.

Click here to see the Infection Prevention & Control brochure.

There are some basic rules you can follow to substantially reduce the spread of germs and protect yourself and the health of all residents, staff, volunteers and visitors.

Hand WashingRespiratory EtiquetteResponsible visiting
Hand washing with soap and water is strongly recommended for you, your family, visitors and staff as the best infection prevention strategy. You will also find numerous alcohol hand sanitizer stations throughout the unit and care centre to support good hand-hygiene practice. We strongly encourage you to wash your hands before and after meal times, after washroom breaks and after blowing your nose. Please encourage anyone entering your room to remember to practice good hand hygiene as well.
Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.  Please sneeze into your sleeve or if you use a tissue, make sure you put the tissue in the garbage, followed by washing your hands.
Please do not visit if you are feeling ill or have symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea or influenza (fever, cough, sore throat, generalized aches and pains).

During influenza season, which generally runs from October to March, you are vulnerable to developing influenza.  Each year, Carewest offers vaccinations for influenza to all people in our care and strongly promotes it as a means to prevent against illness. We recommend all visitors to our care centres also be up to date on their influenza immunization.

Visiting with Pets

Family pets are welcome to visit at some of our centres. Your pet needs to be healthy, vaccinated and under control or on a leash during their visit. Pets are not allowed in any areas where food is served. Animals may also come to the care centre as part of a pet visitation program. Please check with the Client Service Manager to see if there are any special conditions for pets visiting on your unit.

Booking Family Rooms

Some Carewest sites have family lounges or family dining rooms that can be reserved by family members. The process for reserving differs at each site. Please connect with the front receptionist for information on how to book a family room at your site.

Giftshops

Most Carewest care centres have a gift shop with gift ideas and personal care items for residents and visitors. The revenue generated from the gift shops goes directly to a client activity fund for the centre. The gift shops are manned by volunteers or staff and therefore the hours of operation may vary. Please check your site for the hours of operation at its gift shop.

A Smoke-Free Environment

For your safety and well-being, smoking regulations are enforced.  Some Carewest care centres do have designated smoking rooms for client use only. Outside of these designated rooms, smoking is not allowed anywhere on Carewest property.

Secure Units

Some units are secure for those clients who may be unsafe if they leave the care area unaccompanied.  This means that a code is required to enter or exit the unit. As you exit these units, please ensure that residents who are leaving the unit are accompanied by staff or a family member.
